Wholesalers in Winnipeg at the turn of the century benefited
tremendously from favourable rates offered by the Canadian
Pacific Railway. Soon, other railways granted similar rates
resulting in a spectacular increase in the jobbing trade
of the city.
At one point there were nineteen rail lines connecting Winnipeg
to the rest of Canada as the city became the supply point
for Western Canadian settlement.
